A weekend in Vienna

Take a look at Kyle and I's weekend trip to Vienna, Austria.  We left at 5 am on Saturday from Berlin and got back at 11 pm on Sunday night.  What a long weekend but well worth it!

Stasi Prison [Hohenschönhausen Memorial Center]

I visited a Stasi Prison in Berlin that was the main prison for state prisoners.  We learned about the terrible conditions in the prisons and learned about what they know about the prison from prisoners.  Kyle's guide was actually a prisoner and had many stories to share.  This was the most moving and interesting tour I have ever been on.
This was called the submarine by prisoners because it was completely underground.  Prisoners never saw each other or the outside world.

Check out their website to learn more about this important part of Berlin history. http://www.berlin.de/orte/museum/gedenkstaette-berlin-hohenschoenhausen/index.en.php

Bernauer Straße

This past week, I had to visit Bernauer Straße for my Berlin history and literature course.  This street is very well known in Berlin because after WWII the street was divided right now the center.  Part belonged to the Allied powers and the other side to Soviet powers.  So when the wall went up, the area around the street  was completely changed.  Many buildings were torn down to make room for the wall and no man zone.  This is also the area where many escapes attempts and successes took place, including several tunnels. There is also a section of the wall stands untouched.
The poles represent where the wall once stood.

 The tunnel escapes.

 The wall.
 It is really tall!

From above.  The middle part is the no man zone.  So technically there were two walls.
