Bernauer Straße

This past week, I had to visit Bernauer Straße for my Berlin history and literature course.  This street is very well known in Berlin because after WWII the street was divided right now the center.  Part belonged to the Allied powers and the other side to Soviet powers.  So when the wall went up, the area around the street  was completely changed.  Many buildings were torn down to make room for the wall and no man zone.  This is also the area where many escapes attempts and successes took place, including several tunnels. There is also a section of the wall stands untouched.
The poles represent where the wall once stood.

 The tunnel escapes.

 The wall.
 It is really tall!

From above.  The middle part is the no man zone.  So technically there were two walls.
